The story of SpeakEZ, Inc. shows how university technology transfer is supposed to work. A company founded on entrepreneurial spirit and academic endeavor called on IPI to lend the fledgling firm a hand in commercializing the technology (used to identify the speaker on a telephone). Working with the faculty entrepreneur, IPI transformed a great idea into a viable software business with myriad security uses. We recruited the outside advisors, hired staff, managed the finances, negotiated a license with the university tech transfer office, and worked hand-in-hand with the faculty entrepreneur to derive a successful “liquid event” when the company was sold to a strategic partner. Talk about a win-win! Everyone profited from this deal.
